Sexual Assault Awareness Month, 2018

 

Throughout the month of April, the Janelle Grum Family Crisis Center of East Texas will raise public awareness about sexual assault by holding public activities and events in the area. This year’s theme is “USE THE POWER OF YOUR VOICE” to prevent sexual assault in Angelina County.

 

The Family Crisis Center and the Nacogdoches County S.A.V.E. (Sexual Assault Violence Education) Coalition will kick off the month of events on Tuesday, April 3rd with “Coffee, Croissants, & Consent” at the Convention & Visitors Bureau, located on the square in downtown Nacogdoches, across from the fire station. The event will begin at 9:00am.

 

The Family Crisis Center’s “Take Back the Night” event will start at 7:00pm on Tuesday, April 3rd in front of the Student Center on the Angelina College campus. There will be guest speakers and demonstrations, along with a march to “break the silence” of sexual assault occurrences on college campuses.

 

The Family Crisis Center and the Angelina County S.A.V.E. (Sexual Assault Violence Education) Coalition will kick off the month on Wednesday, April 4th with “Prevention in the Park” at Louis Bronaugh Park, located in Lufkin across from City Hall, noon until 1pm. There will be free lunch, guest speakers and entertainment.

 

The Family Crisis Center’s “Take Back the Night” event will start at 7:00pm on Thursday, April 5th in front of the Baker Patillo Student Center on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus. There will be guest speakers and demonstrations, along with a march to “break the silence” of sexual assault occurrences on college campuses.

 

 

 

The Family Crisis Center’s “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” will be a march against violence. It will be men of Stephen F. Austin State University walking in women’s shoes. The march will be on Tuesday, April10th, 6:00pm, starting at the Baker Patillo Student Center on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

 

The Family Crisis Center’s “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” will be a men’s march against violence. It will be men of Angelina College walking in women’s shoes. The march will be on Thursday, April19th, 11;00am, starting at the Student Center Courtyard on the Angelina College campus.

 

A screening of the award-winning documentary, “The Hunting Ground” will be held in Hudgins Hall on the Angelina College campus, at 6:00pm, on Monday, April 23rd. This movie tells the story of sexual assault survivors on college campuses.

 

Denim Day is Wednesday, April 25th, as part of the nation-wide, annual Sexual Assault Awareness Month campaign. Wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a visual symbol of protest against the misconceptions that surround sexual assault. Millions of supporters around the country and globally are expected to participate by wearing jeans on Denim Day this year.

The Janelle Grum Family Crisis Center of East Texas is leading the path to end sexual assault and domestic violence in our community. Through education and community awareness, such occurrences can be reduced or prevented by providing emergency crisis and advocacy services. The Family Crisis Center benefits from the support of the Angelina County S.A.V.E. (Sexual Assault Violence Education) Coalition through partnering with them on endeavors to educate the community.
